Two Google Ads freelancers with the same skills tag can sit $38 an hour apart on the same marketplace. The gap comes from the country on the profile far more than from the reviews under it.

I lead growth marketing at Seotal, after six years across SEM, SEO and CRM at Swiggy and Ola. We collected this data because the published PPC rate figures are either vendor ranges with no sample or surveys of agencies, and neither tells you what a freelancer in a given country asks.

SEM freelancer rates by country in 2026

We read the first 50 profiles with an hourly rate in each of 16 countries on Freelancer.com, filtered to five SEM skills: Search Engine Marketing, PPC Marketing, Google Ads, Google Adwords and Bing Ads. The table gives the median and the middle half of each country's sample.

CountryMedian hourly rateMiddle halfProfiles with no reviews
United States$47.50$35 to $650 of 50
Germany$40$20 to $6935 of 50
United Kingdom$35$20 to $5421 of 50
Canada$30$25 to $4916 of 50
Australia$30$20 to $4930 of 50
Spain$30$15 to $5019 of 50
Pakistan$25$20 to $300 of 50
Ukraine$25$19 to $3031 of 50
Bangladesh$20$11 to $300 of 50
Vietnam$15$8 to $2237 of 50
Malaysia$15$10 to $2042 of 50
Egypt$12$10 to $257 of 50
Philippines$10$8 to $2028 of 50
Nigeria$10$10 to $1825 of 50
Indonesia$10$5 to $1535 of 50
India$9.50$4 to $150 of 50

The six richest markets in the sample all have medians of $30 or more. Pakistan and Ukraine form a middle tier at $25, and the Asian and African markets sit between $9.50 and $20.

Middle half of listed hourly rates for SEM freelancers by country: United States $35 to $65, Germany $20 to $69, United Kingdom $20 to $54, down to Indonesia $5 to $15 and India $4 to $15

Germany has the widest spread. Its middle half runs from $20 to $69, because 17 of its 50 profiles ask more than $50 an hour while 7 ask under $20.

How SEM freelancers price an hour

Across all 800 profiles, the most common band is $10 to $19 an hour, with 212 profiles. The pooled median is $20, the 25th percentile $10 and the 75th percentile $35.

Of 800 SEM freelancer profiles, 133 list under $10 an hour, 212 list $10 to $19, 168 list $20 to $29, 148 list $30 to $49 and 139 list $50 or more

The top band is larger than many buyers expect. 139 profiles, about one in six, ask $50 or more, and 30 ask $100 or more. Most of those $100 profiles sit in the US, Germany, the UK and Spain.

The bands also show where each country's freelancers cluster. Pakistan is the most uniform market in the sample: 32 of its 50 profiles ask $20 to $34. India is the most concentrated at the bottom, with 25 profiles under $10.

Number of the 50 sampled SEM profiles per country in four hourly bands: the United States has 38 at $35 or more, Pakistan has 32 at $20 to $34 and India has 25 under $10

In our sample, which country had more SEM profiles asking $35 an hour or more: Bangladesh or Vietnam?
Bangladesh, with 10 of 50 against 8 of 50 for Vietnam.

Why India's SEM rates look so low

Freelancer.com's directory puts its most established accounts first. India has 8,434 profiles with an SEM skill, the largest pool we queried, so its first 50 are all reviewed and 38 of them are corporate accounts run by agencies.

Those agencies price for volume. The median Indian profile asks $9.50 an hour and carries a median 736 reviews. A $4 to $15 middle half on an agency account tends to buy a junior account manager inside a larger team.

Bangladesh and Pakistan follow the same pattern with a higher price. All 50 profiles in each country have reviews, and their medians are $20 and $25. Our India freelance SEO rates post found the same agency-led directory for SEO work.

Do reviews raise an SEM freelancer's rate?

In most of the markets we sampled, yes. We split each country's 50 profiles into those with no reviews and those with at least one, and kept the nine countries with at least 10 profiles in each group.

Median hourly rate of SEM freelancers with no reviews against 1 or more reviews: Spain $20 to $37, Vietnam $10 to $20, Ukraine $20 to $30, while the United Kingdom and Nigeria show the reverse

Spain shows the largest gap at $17 an hour. Vietnam doubles from $10 to $20, and Ukraine rises from $20 to $30.

Two markets run the other way. New UK profiles ask a median $40 against $35 for reviewed ones, and in Nigeria $15 against $10. New freelancers who came over from in-house roles often set the rate they used to earn, then cut it to win the first reviews.

Account age tells a similar story. Profiles registered in the last three years ask a median $20, and those older than eight years ask $25.

SEM rates by skill: Google Ads, PPC and Bing Ads

Profiles that list Bing Ads ask the most, at a median $32.50 across 34 profiles. Microsoft's ad platform is a smaller niche, and freelancers who list it tend to be generalists with several years of paid search behind them.

Median hourly rate by SEM skill listed: Bing Ads $32.50, PPC Marketing $25, Google Adwords $24, Google Ads $20 and Search Engine Marketing $20

The older "Google Adwords" tag carries a higher median, $24, than the current "Google Ads" tag at $20. Google renamed AdWords in 2018, so the old tag marks accounts that have been on the platform longer.

Day rates for Google Ads and PPC contractors in the UK

UK contract ads pay day rates well above what UK freelancers list on Freelancer.com. IT Jobs Watch shows a median £495 a day for contracts citing Google Ads in the six months to October 1, 2026, from 23 quoted daily rates.

Google Ads contracts
  • Median £495 a day, about $655
  • 23 daily rates quoted in 47 ads

Paid search contracts

IT Jobs Watch files Google Ads under cloud services, so some of those 47 ads may be technical roles working with the Ads API. The paid search and pay per click pages both give £350, from only 4 and 5 quoted rates.

Booked work lands near the paid search figure. YunoJuno lists a Biddable Manager at an average £367 a day from its booking data. A biddable role covers paid social and programmatic as well as search.

SEM freelance rates in Germany, Austria and Switzerland

German-speaking clients call paid search SEA, for Suchmaschinenwerbung. On freelancermap, the 2,408 profiles tagged Google Ads ask an average €82 an hour, about $93. Its SEA directory averages €85 across 2,125 profiles.

Those averages sit about twice the $40 median of German profiles on Freelancer.com. freelancermap is a domestic platform for project work billed in euros, and its users quote the rates German clients expect.

Malt does not publish a paid search barometer. Its closest category, digital marketing experts in Germany, averages €730 a day for 8 to 15 years of experience. The French web marketing consultant average is €523, and the Spanish one averages €254 a day.

What Upwork shows for SEM and Google Ads freelancers

Upwork's own cost pages give ranges without a median or sample. Its SEM specialists page puts typical rates at $20 to $55 an hour, and its Google Ads experts page at $15 to $40.

Upwork says the ranges come from historical contracts worldwide. Our pooled middle half of $10 to $35 sits a little lower, which fits a sample that includes new profiles and agencies in low-cost markets.

What platform fees add to an SEM freelancer's rate

The listed rate leaves out platform fees. Freelancer.com's fee page takes 10% of hourly project payments from the freelancer, and charges the employer 3%.

Upwork's freelancer service fee runs from 0% to 15% per contract. Freelancers who know they lose 10% to 15% build it into the rate they list, so the fee shows up in the client's price either way.

For salaried context, ZipRecruiter estimates a US PPC consultant at $86,430 a year, about $41.55 an hour. A Google Ads specialist comes in at $62,671, about $30.13. Those are employee salaries from job ads, before benefits and payroll costs, so the $47.50 US median sits close to a mid-level employee's fully loaded cost.

Methodology

We used the Freelancer.com public directory API on October 1, 2026. For each of 16 countries, we filtered to profiles located in that country that list at least one of five SEM skills: Search Engine Marketing, PPC Marketing, Google Ads, Google Adwords or Bing Ads.

We read profiles in the directory's default order and kept the first 50 that show an hourly rate, 800 in all. For each one we recorded the hourly rate, review count, rating, account type, SEM skills listed and registration date. Percentiles use linear interpolation, the same method as a spreadsheet's PERCENTILE.INC.

The default order favours established accounts in large pools. In India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and the US, every sampled profile had reviews. In smaller pools such as Malaysia, Vietnam and Germany, most sampled profiles had none. We report both groups for each country in the dataset.

Listed rates are what freelancers ask, before platform fees, and the files omit usernames. The full dataset is free to reuse under CC BY 4.0: download the CSV or the summary JSON.

Hiring a freelance SEM specialist through Seotal

Our pricing page lists hourly work at $15 to $30 an hour, with no minimum and no platform fees. A part-time retainer costs $1,000 to $2,000 a month for 60 to 80 hours, with a 3-month minimum.

For full-time paid search work, the same page shows performance marketer rates by country, such as $1,200 to $2,500 a month for a mid-level hire in India. Each specialist passes a written test, a live interview, an English assessment and a reference check, and fewer than 5% of applicants get in.

Tell us about your account and get 3 to 5 vetted profiles within 72 hours. If you also need organic search, compare SEO freelancer rates by country or our list of websites to hire SEO freelancers.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between SEM and PPC?

SEM covers paid listings on search engines, led by Google Ads and Microsoft Advertising. PPC is the pricing model behind them, where you pay per click, and it also covers paid social. Freelancers mix the two terms on their profiles, which is why we filtered on all five skill tags.

Should I pay an SEM freelancer hourly or a percentage of ad spend?

Hourly suits setup work and audits, where the hours are easy to estimate. Ongoing management is often priced as a monthly fee or a share of spend. A percentage rewards the freelancer for raising your budget, so cap it or pair it with a flat fee.

How many hours a month does a Google Ads account need?

It depends on the number of campaigns and how often you change offers. At our sample's $20 median, 10 hours a month of search term reviews, bid changes and ad tests costs $200 before fees. Our guide to freelance social media manager rates covers the paid social side of the same budget.
