An SEO contractor billing the £475 median day rate passes the £90,000 VAT registration threshold after about 190 billed days, and from then on adds 20% VAT to each invoice. At the $25 marketplace median, the same turnover takes more than 4,800 hours. I lead growth marketing at Seotal, and we read the profiles below for this post.
How much does a freelance SEO specialist charge in the UK?
Half of the UK SEO freelancers on Freelancer.com list $17 to $43.50 an hour, with a $25 median. We read every UK profile carrying the SEO skill on Freelancer.com's UK SEO directory on November 4, 2026: 624 profiles, all with an hourly rate. A second sample came from the first 100 listings on Guru's UK SEO directory.
| Source | What the rate is | Rates | Median (USD) | Median (GBP) | Middle half (USD) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Freelancer.com | Hourly rate on the profile | 624 | $25 | £18.63 | $17 to $43.50 |
| Guru | Hourly rate on the top service listing | 99 | $30 | £22.36 | $15 to $45 |
| IT Jobs Watch, contract | Hourly rate in UK SEO contract ads | 8 | $29.52 | £22.00 | £19.13 to £25.56 |
Freelancer.com shows every rate in US dollars, even on the 520 profiles whose account currency is pounds. Sterling figures use the Bank of England spot rate of $1.3416 per pound on November 2, 2026.
The rate a profile asks shifts with where the freelancer is and what they have proven:

How are UK SEO freelance rates spread across price bands?
The $20 to $30 band holds the most UK profiles, 160 of 624, but the spread is wide. 140 profiles ask $50 or more, and 28 of those ask $100 or more an hour. At the bottom, 26 list under $10.

A few top rates are not credible as hourly prices. The highest UK profile asks $1,000 an hour and the next two ask $805 and $700, so a mean would mislead. The figures in this post are medians and percentiles for that reason.
Guru's sample tilts lower. Of its 99 UK listings, 31 ask under $20, though its median of $30 sits above Freelancer.com's. Guru's directory counts 3,000 UK freelancers offering SEO services, against 624 UK SEO profiles on Freelancer.com.
Do reviews and London raise UK SEO rates?
Both do, by about $5 an hour at the median. London profiles ask $30 against $25 for the rest of the UK, and profiles with 10 or more reviews and a rating of 4.5 or higher ask $30. Their middle half starts at $25, against $16 for profiles with no reviews.
Most UK SEO profiles on the platform are new and unreviewed:

That changes how to read the median. A new profile prices itself before any client has paid that rate, so the $25 figure says more about what UK SEO freelancers hope to charge than what the market has confirmed.
London holds 103 of the 624 profiles, followed by Manchester with 24, Birmingham with 14 and Liverpool with 12. Profiles on US dollar accounts ask a lower median, $21, against $25 on pound accounts.
A UK SEO freelancer has 10+ reviews and a 4.5 rating on Freelancer.com. What hourly rate do profiles like that list at the median?
What do UK SEO contractors charge per day?
UK SEO contractors quote a median day rate of £475 ($637), per IT Jobs Watch's SEO contract tracker for the six months to November 4, 2026. It read 51 day rates in 130 UK contract ads citing SEO. The middle half ran from £331 to £588, and the top tenth started at £625.
On a 7.5-hour day, £475 works out to about £63 an hour. The day rate and the marketplace rates measure different markets. Contract ads come from agencies and in-house teams hiring for a fixed term, often full-time and on site, while marketplace profiles sell hours to whoever buys them.
The contract rate also swings from year to year:

The sample is small, 29 rates in 2025 and 51 in 2026, so one large hiring round can move the median. Outside London the 2026 median was £519, above the all-UK figure. In 2025 it ran the other way: £305 outside London against £350 for the UK.
IT Jobs Watch also counted 130 contract ads citing SEO in the 2026 period, against 62 a year earlier.
What do UK SEO freelancers charge per project?
Guru's UK SEO listings start at a median of $63 for a fixed-price service, about £47. The "starting at" figure is the cheapest package on each freelancer's top listing, so it marks the entry price for a defined task, such as an audit or a month of link outreach, not a full engagement.
Of the 100 listings, 57 start under $100, 28 start between $100 and $499, and 15 start at $500 or more. The middle half runs from $25 to $250. A low starting price often buys a narrow task, so compare what each package delivers, not only the number.
Titles show what UK sellers lead with: 5 of the first 10 listings name white hat SEO or link building. One of the 100 top services is Shopify development rather than SEO.
What do UK platforms report for booked SEO work?
Booked UK rates land below advertised contract rates. The YunoJuno 2026 rates report, built from approved contractor rates and confirmed bookings, lists an SEO Consultant at £374 a day. That is £101 under the IT Jobs Watch contract median for the six months to November.
London ads sit close to the UK figure. IT Jobs Watch's London SEO page shows a median of £488 a day from 32 quoted rates, against £519 for the UK outside London. Its London hourly median, £26.50, rests on two rates, too few to use.
Our September SEO freelancer rates by country post recorded a £400 UK median for the six months to September 15. The window ending November 4 gives £475 from 51 rates, which shows how far a few contracts can move this figure.
What do salaried SEO specialists earn in the UK?
UK permanent job ads citing SEO advertise a median salary of £45,000, from 609 salaries quoted in the six months to November 4, 2026, per IT Jobs Watch's permanent SEO tracker. That is 12.5% above the £40,000 median a year earlier.

Outside London the median is £40,000. Ads citing SEO rose to 1,047 from 586 in the same period of 2025, though as a share of all UK permanent ads SEO fell from 1.17% to 0.86%.
An employer also pays National Insurance and pension contributions on top of that salary, which a freelancer's rate already covers. Our SEO manager salary guide covers the senior end, and our ranking of the highest SEO salaries by country puts the UK against other markets.
How do IR35, VAT and National Insurance change the cost?
Three UK rules decide what a freelance SEO costs beyond the rate on the profile, and which side of the contract carries them.
- Hourly rate, $25 median on Freelancer.com
- Pays own Class 4 National Insurance
- Adds VAT once turnover passes £90,000
- Day rate, £475 median in contract ads
- IR35 can make the client deduct tax
- Passes £90,000 after about 190 days at the median
IR35. The off-payroll working rules apply when a worker sells services through their own intermediary, usually a limited company. In most cases a medium or large client decides the worker's employment status. For a small private sector client, the worker's intermediary "will continue to be responsible for deciding your worker's employment status".
VAT. A freelancer must register once taxable turnover passes £90,000 over 12 months, and then charges the 20% standard VAT rate. A VAT-registered business client can reclaim it as input tax; a client below the threshold that is not registered cannot.
National Insurance. Self-employed freelancers pay Class 4 National Insurance of 6% on profits from £12,570 to £50,270 and 2% above that, for the 2026 to 2027 tax year. It comes out of the freelancer's rate, so it does not add to your invoice.
For the contract itself, our SEO contract template lists the clauses to agree before work starts.

UK freelance SEO rates: frequently asked questions
Is a day rate or an hourly rate better for SEO work?
A day rate suits a fixed-term role with set hours, which is how most UK contract ads price SEO. An hourly rate suits small, irregular tasks such as an audit or monthly reporting. Our guide to what SEO consultants charge compares the pricing models.
Are UK SEO rates higher than in the UAE?
Yes, at the median. UK Freelancer.com profiles list $25 an hour against $15 in our UAE freelance SEO rates sample from September 2026.
