Only 11% of salaried social marketers in Hootsuite's 2023 survey of 3,842 people had social as their main job. The average one handled about eight social tasks, from copywriting and video edits to ads and analytics.

That spread is why two quotes for "managing our Instagram" can price different jobs. I worked across social, paid search and CRM at Swiggy and Ola, and on any social quote I would read the scope before the rate.

How much does a freelance social media manager charge per hour?

A freelance social media manager with 7+ years of experience charges $92.23 an hour on average, and one with 1 to 3 years charges $46.71. Those figures come from HeyOrca's social media pricing survey, published in May 2024. HeyOrca asked more than 100 freelancers and agencies what they charge, in US dollars. The average across all respondents was $66.96 an hour.

Freelancers charge $46.71 an hour with 1 to 3 years of experience, $57.84 with 4 to 6 years and $92.23 with 7 or more, against $50.00, $74.86 and $85.33 for agencies

Senior freelancers out-price agencies. At 7+ years, a freelancer averages $92.23 an hour against $85.33 for an agency of the same age. In the middle band, agencies charge more: $74.86 against $57.84.

Job ads tell a lower story. ZipRecruiter's freelance social media management page puts the US average at $25.32 an hour on September 26, 2026. Its 25th to 75th percentile band runs from $32,500 to $57,000 a year. The title "freelance social media marketing manager" averages $31.18 an hour on the same site.

Marketplaces add their own cut. On Upwork, clients on the free Basic plan pay a Client Marketplace Fee of up to 7.99% on all payments to freelancers. Freelancers pay a service fee of 0% to 15%, fixed for each contract. Upwork's own example shows a freelancer billing $22.22 an hour to take home $20 at a 10% fee.

What does a monthly social media retainer cost?

A retainer for three platforms averages $2,107.14 a month across the freelancers and agencies in HeyOrca's survey. The scope behind that number is specific: LinkedIn, Instagram and Facebook for one client. Each week, the plan covers 3 approved posts per platform, 5 to 10 hours of community management and in-depth reporting.

Freelance retainers for three platforms average $2,000 under 1 year of experience, $1,750 at 1 to 3 years, $1,900 at 4 to 6 years and $2,765 at 7 or more

Experience moves the retainer less than it moves the hourly rate. Freelancers with under a year charged $2,000, more than the $1,750 of those with 1 to 3 years. Only the 7+ years group breaks away, at $2,764.71. Agencies ranged from $1,833.33 to $2,277.78 for the same brief.

Freelancers also mix pricing models more than agencies do. In the same survey, 48% of freelancers offer more than one pricing option. At agencies, 72% use a single method, in most cases a retainer.

How platform count changes the price

Platforms are the second thing providers price on. 68% of respondents named the number of platforms as a pricing factor, behind scope of work at 93%. Experience came third at 52%.

Each platform is a separate content calendar. A reel cut for Instagram, a carousel for LinkedIn and a thread for X share an idea but not a file. Ask for the retainer priced per platform so you can drop one later without renegotiating the rest.

How many posts should a retainer include?

Brands across 14 industries posted 4.5 times a week on Instagram in 2024, down from 4.7 the year before. That is from Rival IQ's 2025 Social Media Industry Benchmark Report, which analysed more than 4 million posts. Facebook fell to 4.2 posts a week, X to 2.2 and TikTok rose to 2.0 videos.

Weekly Facebook posts fell from 5.9 in 2021 to 4.2 in 2024, while Instagram stayed between 4.0 and 4.7 and reached 4.5 in 2024

Posting less did not lift engagement. Rival IQ found engagement rates fell on all four platforms it tracked: 36% on Facebook, 16% on Instagram, 34% on TikTok and 48% on X. Four posts a week on Facebook and Instagram puts a brand close to the 2024 median on both.

HeyOrca's brief of 3 posts a week per platform sits a little under Rival IQ's Instagram median. That makes it a fair baseline for a small business retainer. If a quote promises daily posts on five platforms at the same price, ask which of the service lines below it leaves out.

In HeyOrca's retainer brief, how many posts does the freelancer deliver per month across three platforms?
About 39. The brief asks for 3 posts per platform per week, which is 9 a week, over about 4.3 weeks.

How much does a freelancer charge per post?

A starter Instagram project with 10 approved posts cost $1,509.62 on average in HeyOrca's survey. That price includes account setup and a content strategy, so it works out to about $151 a post with the setup folded in. Freelancers charged $1,227.27 to $1,880.95 for it, depending on experience.

An Instagram starter project with setup, strategy and 10 posts costs $1,227 to $1,881 from freelancers and $1,150 to $1,833 from agencies

Inside a retainer, the per-post figure drops. The $2,107.14 retainer covers about 39 posts a month, or about $54 a post. That figure also pays for community management and reporting, so a per-post quote that looks cheaper may leave both out.

Per-post pricing suits a business that already answers its own comments and only needs content. A business that wants someone to watch the inbox is better served by a retainer with community hours written into it.

What is included in social media management?

Social media management covers four separate jobs, and quotes differ most in how many of them they include. Hootsuite's 2023 career survey found the average social marketer handles about eight social tasks. The most common social team in that survey is a single person.

In Hootsuite's 2023 survey, 11% of salaried social marketers have social as their main job, and 8% of businesses on social have no dedicated social marketer

The Hootsuite teams and tasks report lists what those tasks are. Grouped into the lines you will see on a quote:

Service lineTypical tasksWhat to ask for in writing
Content creationCopy, graphics, short video edits, carouselsNumber of posts per platform, formats, rounds of revisions
Scheduling and publishingContent calendar, posting, first commentsWho pays for the scheduling tool, approval steps
Community managementReplies to comments and DMs, moderationHours per week, response time, escalation rules
Paid socialAd setup, targeting, testing, budget pacingManagement fee vs ad spend, who owns the ad account

Tools are a separate line. Buffer's pricing page lists its Essentials plan at $5 a month per channel billed yearly. Hootsuite's plans start at $99 per user a month, billed annually, for up to 10 social accounts.

How do US and UK rates compare with Asia?

A social media manager in the US earns an average base salary of $60,881, according to Payscale's US data from 2,595 salary profiles updated in June 2026. In the UK, Payscale reports £29,313 across 231 profiles, last updated in February 2026. India's average is ₹360,681, based on 237 profiles updated in June 2026.

Average social media manager base salary is $60,881 in the United States, about $38,847 in the United Kingdom and about $3,764 in India

The chart converts pounds and rupees with the European Central Bank reference rates of September 25, 2026. Crossed through the euro, they put one dollar at £0.755 or ₹95.82.

The Philippines has its own benchmark. JobStreet's salary page for social media managers puts the average monthly salary at ₱25,000 to ₱35,000, refreshed on September 1, 2026. At the same ECB rates, ₱62.48 to the dollar, that is about $400 to $560 a month. Our Philippines digital marketing statistics cover the audience these marketers work with at home.

These are salaries for employees, not freelance rates. A freelancer's rate also has to cover tools, taxes and unpaid gaps between contracts, which a salary does not. Is a freelancer cheaper than an in-house social media manager?

For one brand on two or three platforms, yes. The Bureau of Labor Statistics has no occupation for social media managers. Its closest match, public relations specialists, earned a median of $74,750 in May 2025, or $35.94 an hour. BLS lists monitoring and answering social media questions as part of that job.

The other close match, market research analysts and marketing specialists, had a median of $78,760. Hootsuite's 2023 survey of 3,842 social marketers found an average salary of $67,585. 51% of them also received a bonus, averaging $6,470.

Wages are only part of the bill. Benefits made up 30.0% of what private US employers spent on compensation in June 2026, according to the BLS Employer Costs for Employee Compensation release for that month.

  • Full 40-hour week, often shared with PR or email work

In-house hire vs freelance retainer

An in-house hire makes sense when social is a full week of work: several brands, daily customer service in DMs, or live event coverage. For a single brand posting a few times a week, HeyOrca's three-platform brief covers the workload without a full-time salary. Our guide to hiring a specialist on contract covers contract terms that carry over to social roles.

Frequently asked questions

How often do freelance social media managers raise their rates?

About half do so each year. In HeyOrca's 2024 survey, 49.5% of social media managers had changed their rates in the past year, and 32.69% of those named the rising cost of living as the reason.

Do I need to file a 1099 for a freelance social media manager?

For a US contractor, you file Form 1099-NEC once you pay them at least $2,000 in nonemployee compensation in 2026. That threshold is set in the IRS instructions for Forms 1099-MISC and 1099-NEC.
