Only 4% of the 171 search professionals in SEOFOMO's August 2026 survey have a dedicated AI search specialist in charge of that work. At 77% of their companies, the SEO team owns it. The role is SEO plus three extra jobs: tracking prompts across assistants, managing AI crawlers and earning mentions on the pages AI answers cite.
How much does an AI SEO specialist cost in 2026?
A fixed-price GEO offer on PeoplePerHour costs $70 to $280, while WebFX's published AI SEO plans run up to $68,250 a month. A US in-house hire sits near $78,760 a year, the Bureau of Labor Statistics median for the occupation group that includes marketing specialists. Each price buys a different amount of work:
| Hiring model | Published price | What the price covers | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Marketplace freelancer, hourly | Under $15 to over $60 an hour | Rate bands in the hourly filter | PeoplePerHour |
| Marketplace freelancer, fixed price | $70 to $280 per offer | One-off GEO setups, monthly visibility reports | PeoplePerHour |
| SEO consultant, hourly | $50 or less to $151 to $200+ | All SEO work, by experience | Backlinko survey, December 2025 |
| Agency AI SEO plan | $3,000 to $68,250 a month | Audit, prompt monitoring, content assets | WebFX |
| Agency GEO package | $3,500 to $10,000+ a month | Content support for 2 to 8+ pieces a month, strategy calls | Percepture |
| In-house, US | $78,760 median a year | Market research analysts and marketing specialists | BLS, May 2025 |
Commitment terms change the real bill as much as the monthly fee. WebFX sells its AI SEO plans on a 6-month commitment, so its entry plan is an $18,000 decision. Percepture's pricing page does not state a minimum term or a setup fee.
What does an AI SEO specialist do?
An AI SEO specialist works to get a brand cited and recommended in AI-generated answers, including Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, ChatGPT search, Perplexity, Gemini and Claude. The job combines technical SEO, structured data and content work with AI crawler management and tracking a fixed set of buyer prompts.
The job has no settled name. In the 2025 edition of the SEOFOMO survey, reported by Search Engine Land, 36% of more than 200 senior SEOs called it AI search optimization. Another 27% called it SEO, and 18% generative engine optimization (GEO). Others used AEO (answer engine optimization) or LLMO.
GEO started as an academic term. The 2023 paper GEO: Generative Engine Optimization, by Pranjal Aggarwal and five co-authors, reported that its methods "can boost visibility by up to 40% in generative engine responses".
Practitioners rank the work by impact. Asked which tactic moved AI visibility most, SEOFOMO's 2026 respondents picked:
- Expanding content to cover relevant questions and topics: 18%.
- Improving technical crawlability and accessibility: 17%.
- Restructuring content for easier retrieval: 16%.

What do freelance AI SEO specialists charge per hour?
324 freelancers in PeoplePerHour's generative engine optimization search list rates over $60 an hour, against 911 under $15. The $15 to $35 band is the largest. The top profiles in the results list skills such as web design and link building alongside SEO, so the counts include SEO generalists as well as GEO specialists.

Sellers there also package the work as fixed-price offers. The GEO offers on the PeoplePerHour generative engine optimization page, read September 15, 2026, included:
- $70: a webpage for AI search and generative engine visibility.
- $130: GEO to get a brand cited by AI.
- $250: GEO to rank a brand in AI search engines.
- $275: monthly GEO and visibility reporting.
- $280: website optimization for AI engines and Google, covering GEO, AEO and SEO.
Survey data puts experienced consultants far higher. Backlinko's SEO pricing survey of more than 300 SEO professionals, updated December 29, 2025, reports these hourly rates:
- Entry level (1 to 3 years): $50 or less.
- Mid level (4 to 6 years): $50 to $100.
- Senior (7+ years): $101 to $150.
- Expert: $151 to $200+.
Backlinko found rates rise by about $15 to $25 an hour for each year of experience, up to 10 years. The two sources differ because Backlinko asks what practitioners charge for all SEO work, while PeoplePerHour shows asking rates from sellers in any country. Our SEO freelancer rates by country break the market down by location.
What do agencies charge for GEO and AI search optimization?
WebFX's Bronze plan monitors 50 AI prompts for $3,000 a month, and its Enterprise+ plan monitors 2,000. All plans on the WebFX AI SEO pricing page include an AI visibility audit across 10 AI answer engines and monthly prompt monitoring with performance scoring. They also include competitor analysis for up to five rivals.

Percepture's GEO pricing prices content output instead of prompts. The New York agency lists four packages:
- Launch: from $3,500 a month, with AI-ready content support for 2 pieces a month.
- Growth: from $6,000 a month, with 4 pieces.
- Authority: from $8,500 a month, with 6 to 8 pieces and bi-weekly strategy calls.
- Enterprise: from $10,000 a month, with 8+ pieces and a custom scope.
AI link and mention building costs $1,000 to $1,600 a month extra, depending on the package, and digital PR starts at $4,500 a month.
First Page Sage published market tiers in November 2025, based on "the small number of companies formally offering GEO services today". Its GEO cost breakdown says the cheapest tier only "purchases low-cost placements on ranking websites". The top tier adds 3 to 5 list articles a month, reputation management and PR.

Survey averages sit far below list prices. In SE Ranking's agency pricing survey of 260 agencies, published in December 2024, AI Overview optimization averaged $937 a month. That average covers agencies that had set a price, including prices they planned to charge.
In the same survey, 61% of agencies planned to offer the service: 43% inside existing services and 18% as an extra. For the wider retainer, see what SEO costs a small business.
What do AI visibility tracking tools cost?
OtterlyAI's Lite plan tracks 15 prompts for $29 a month across ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity and Microsoft Copilot. Prompt counts and the number of AI engines set the price across the category:
- OtterlyAI: Standard costs $189 a month for 100 prompts, and Premium $489 for 400, billed monthly. Annual billing takes 15% off. Claude, Google AI Mode and Gemini cost extra.
- Profound: Starter costs $99 a month billed yearly and tracks 50 prompts on ChatGPT only. Growth costs $399 a month, also billed yearly, for 100 prompts on 3 answer engines.
- Ahrefs: the Brand Radar AI add-on starts at $199 a month, on top of a plan that starts at $129 a month for Lite.
WebFX's $3,000 Bronze plan monitors 50 prompts, the same count as Profound's $99 Starter plan. The agency fee also covers the AI visibility audit, a dedicated consultant and monthly strategy reviews.

What does an in-house AI SEO specialist cost?
The Bureau of Labor Statistics has no occupation called AI SEO specialist. Its closest group, market research analysts and marketing specialists, earned a median $78,760 a year in May 2025, or $37.87 an hour. BLS projects employment in the group to grow 7% from 2025 to 2035.
Our SEO salaries by country post took the Glassdoor figures from its September 2026 data. The $86,582 average draws on 3,524 salaries and combines a $75K base with $12K of additional pay.
Salary is only part of the cost. Tracking tools come on top, and someone has to review the prompt set and crawler rules. Our guide on how to hire an SEO specialist shows how to vet candidates with structured interviews and paid work samples.
Which AI crawlers does an AI SEO specialist manage?
Blocking GPTBot does not take a site out of ChatGPT search. OpenAI's crawler documentation lists three user agents: OAI-SearchBot surfaces sites in ChatGPT search, GPTBot crawls content that may train its models, and ChatGPT-User fetches pages when a user asks. OpenAI says "each setting is independent of the others".

Sites that opt out of OAI-SearchBot "will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers, though can still appear as navigational links". A robots.txt change takes about 24 hours to reach OpenAI's systems.
The other two companies split the jobs the same way:
- Perplexity: its bot documentation says PerplexityBot is not used to crawl content for AI foundation models. Perplexity-User "generally ignores robots.txt rules" because a user started the request.
- Anthropic: its help center lists ClaudeBot for training, Claude-SearchBot for search and Claude-User for user questions. Disabling Claude-SearchBot "may reduce your site's visibility and accuracy in user search results". Anthropic's bots also support the Crawl-delay extension.
Google runs its own opt-out. Google-Extended controls whether crawled content trains Gemini models and grounds Gemini answers. Google says it "does not impact a site's inclusion in Google Search".

Does Google need special optimization for AI Overviews?
No. Google's Search Central page on AI features and your website, updated December 10, 2025, puts it in one line:
"There are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, nor other special optimizations necessary."
To use a page as a supporting link, Google must have indexed it, and the page must be eligible to show in Search with a snippet. Google adds that you do not need new machine-readable files, AI text files or special schema.org markup. A proposal that sells an AI text file as the way into AI Overviews contradicts that page.
- Page indexed and eligible for a snippet
- Clicks reported in Search Console, Web search type
- Limits set with nosnippet, max-snippet or noindex
- OAI-SearchBot allowed in robots.txt
- Opted-out sites can still show as navigational links
- Robots.txt changes take about 24 hours
Both features may use "query fan-out", which runs several related searches across subtopics to find supporting pages. Local businesses can follow our guide to showing up in Google AI Overviews, and our local SEO schema guide covers the markup side.
How much are companies spending on AI search work?
69% of the search professionals in SEOFOMO's 2026 survey have a budget for AI search optimization, against 38% in the 2025 edition. The share tracking AI visibility and citations rose from 78% to 92%.

The two editions asked different groups: over 200 senior SEOs in 2025, and 171 search professionals from 36 countries in August 2026. Read the lines as direction, not exact growth.
Returns lag the budgets. In the 2026 SEOFOMO report, 56% report at least some positive business impact, 5% call it significant and 28% see no impact yet. In the 2025 edition, 62% said AI search drives less than 5% of revenue.
Can an AI SEO specialist guarantee AI citations?
No. AI systems pick their own sources, and senior SEOs in the 2025 SEOFOMO survey named "lack of attribution and volatile AI answers" as their top frustration. In the 2026 edition, 19% named measuring AI search visibility as the biggest challenge, and 14% understanding what influences it.
Google already sets the standard for ranking promises. Its page Do you need an SEO?, updated June 5, 2026, states: "No one can guarantee a #1 ranking on Google."
