Verblio sells the same blog post at two prices: 6¢ a word when its writers draft with in-house AI tools, and 16¢ when the copy is fully human. WriterAccess, a rival platform, prices its writers from 4¢ to over $1.00 a word by skill level. The spread comes from what sits behind each word: research, subject knowledge and editing.
How much does an SEO copywriter charge?
Blog posts sold as work for hire, where the client owns the copy and can change it, cost 25¢ to 45¢ a word in the Editorial Freelancers Association 2026 Rate Chart.
The EFA built the chart from a survey of more than 1,100 members, run from November 2025 to mid-January 2026, on rates they charged in 2025. Each range sits around the median rate members reported.
Per word
Per-word pricing lets you compare platforms and freelancers on one scale, and the spread is wide. Content platforms sit at the bottom:
- WriterAccess Basic: a flat 5¢ a word, on top of a $49 monthly platform fee, per its pricing page.
- Verblio: 6¢ a word for AI-assisted copy and 16¢ for fully human copy, per Verblio's pricing.
- WriterAccess Pro and Managed: 4¢ to $1.00+ a word, set by the writer's star level.

The EFA figures are what independent writers charge their own clients, with no platform in between. Marketing copy, such as landing pages and product pages, runs 32¢ to 87.5¢ a word on the EFA chart.
Per hour
EFA members charge $74.50 to $87.50 an hour for blog posts written as work for hire and $65 to $75 for marketing copy. Ghostwritten work costs more, because the writer gives up any credit: $75 to $100 for blog posts and $87.50 to $125 for marketing copy.

UK surveys track day rates instead. The median freelance copywriter charged £440 a day in the ProCopywriters Survey 2026, a 10% rise in two years. For how SEO hourly rates compare across countries, see our guide to SEO freelancer rates.
Per article and per month
A work for hire blog post costs $62.50 to $112.50 a page on the EFA chart, where a page is 250 words. Members report writing 1 to 3 pages an hour for that kind of work.
Monthly spend is volume times rate, plus any platform fee. WriterAccess charges $49 a month for Basic, $79 for Pro and from $449 for Managed, with the writing billed on top. Freelancers on a retainer quote a set number of pieces a month.
What is an SEO copywriter?
An SEO copywriter writes web pages and articles that rank in search and persuade the reader who lands on them.
The job joins two skills: finding what searchers want from a query, and writing copy that makes them act. Most of the work is blog posts, service and landing pages, product pages, and the title tags and meta descriptions that sit above them in results.
A typical SEO copywriter job description covers:
- Turning a keyword and brief into an outline that matches search intent.
- Writing and revising drafts in the brand's voice.
- Citing sources for claims, statistics and quotes.
- Writing title tags, meta descriptions and internal links.
- Updating older pages when rankings slip.
The title overlaps with two others. Job ads mix them up, so check the scope rather than the label:
| Role | Main output | Typical pricing |
|---|---|---|
| SEO copywriter | Pages that rank and convert | Per word, per page or hourly |
| Content writer | Articles, guides, newsletters | Per word or per article |
| SEO specialist | Keyword plans, technical fixes, links, reporting | Hourly or monthly retainer |
An SEO specialist decides which pages to write and fixes the site around them. The copywriter writes the pages. Our guide to SEO outsourcing costs covers what the specialist side costs.
What does an SEO copywriter earn in salary?
The US Bureau of Labor Statistics has no job code for an SEO copywriter. Its closest category, writers and authors, had a median wage of $76,910 in May 2025, or $36.98 an hour. The BLS names copywriters inside that group: they "prepare advertisements to promote the sale of a good or service."
Sites that track the exact title land close to that. ZipRecruiter put the average US SEO copywriter salary at $76,412 on September 26, 2026, with most between $58,000 and $86,500. Its estimates come from job postings and third party data, not from paychecks.

Payscale's self-reported data sits lower. Its US copywriter page shows a $63,894 average base salary from 1,449 profiles, and content writers average $59,294 from 1,110. Writers who handle software or product docs earn more: technical writers had a $90,390 median in May 2025.
UK, Australia, India, Malaysia and the Philippines
The UK is the only market outside the US with a usable "SEO copywriter" sample. Glassdoor UK shows an average of £24,581 from 43 salaries, with the middle half between £20,326 and £29,726.

Elsewhere, the closest titles are copywriter or content writer. Each figure below is Payscale's average base salary in local currency, read on September 26, 2026:
| Country | Title on Payscale | Average base salary | Profiles | Last updated |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| UK | Copywriter | £28,135 | 116 | March 2026 |
| Australia | Copywriter | AU$67,273 | 94 | May 2026 |
| India | Content writer | ₹339,965 | 623 | June 2026 |
| Malaysia | Content writer | RM34,189 | 64 | November 2025 |
| Philippines | Content writer | ₱264,027 | 76 | March 2026 |

Should you hire a freelance or in-house SEO copywriter?
Most writers are freelance: 65% of US writers and authors were self-employed in 2025, per the BLS. Only 9% worked in professional, scientific and technical services, the next biggest group.

The BLS projects "little or no change" in writer jobs from 2025 to 2035. It gives the reason: "Increasing use of artificial intelligence (AI) for writing is projected to dampen demand for these workers." It adds that writers "will continue to be needed for online media and advertising", the market SEO copy serves.
An in-house hire suits a steady queue on a complex product the writer has to learn. Buying per piece suits uneven volume and varied topics. A contract should set the word rate, revision rounds and who owns the copy. Our SEO contract template has clauses you can adapt.
What makes an SEO copywriter charge more?
Subject expertise shows the biggest jump on the EFA chart. Medical copy as work for hire costs $1.00 to $1.50 a word on the EFA chart, and technical copy $1.00. A general blog post costs 25¢ to 45¢.
- Medical, scientific or technical topics
- Original research, interviews, data
- Ghostwriting with no byline
- Landing pages that must convert
- General topics with public sources
- Brief with sources already attached
- Work for hire under your brand
- Informational blog posts
EFA members price research as its own service: $47.50 to $60 an hour, and $50 to $60 for fact checking, below their writing rates. A brief that arrives with keywords, sources and an outline cuts those hours from the quote.
Credit changes the price too. Ghostwritten marketing copy costs $87.50 to $125 an hour against $65 to $75 as work for hire, per the same chart. For a comparison with SEO strategy work, see what SEO consultants charge.
Does AI-assisted SEO copy cost less, and does Google penalise it?
AI-assisted copy costs less on platforms that give it its own price. Verblio charges 6¢ a word for its hybrid copy against 16¢ for fully human work. Google does not ban AI-written pages. Its guidance on generative AI content, updated in December 2025, says the tools "can be particularly useful when researching a topic, and to add structure to original content."
Copywriters themselves use the tools but dislike them. In the ProCopywriters 2026 survey, almost three-quarters said they use generative AI. Asked if they would press a button that erased it from the world, 64% said yes, up from 45% a year earlier.
Google's page on helpful, reliable, people-first content asks who wrote a page, how and why. It calls AI disclosures useful "for content where someone might think 'How was this created?'"
"Of these aspects, trust is most important." Google Search Central, on the experience, expertise, authoritativeness and trust signals it looks for.
Ask any copywriter how they use AI, and whether their rate changes with it. A writer who drafts with AI and checks each fact is a different purchase from one who pastes output.
How do you test an SEO copywriter before hiring?
Pay for one real page from your queue. A paid test shows research, structure and how the writer takes edits. A portfolio shows the finished page, not how it got there. At the EFA's 25¢ to 45¢ a word, a 1,000-word test costs $250 to $450.

I would check three things first: whether the outline matches what already ranks for the keyword, whether each statistic links to its source, and whether the second draft fixes what the first one missed. Score each out of five and compare writers on the same brief.
Should you judge an SEO copywriting test by an AI detector score?
Look at live samples too. Ask for URLs, not PDFs, and check a few in search: a page the writer says ranks should still be there. For where to find candidates, see our list of websites to hire SEO freelancers.

Frequently asked questions
Does a longer article rank better on Google?
No. Google's people-first content guide asks writers if they are working to a set word count "because you've heard or read that Google has a preferred word count", and answers: "No, we don't." Pay for the length a topic needs.
Do SEO copywriters need a degree?
For salaried roles, the BLS says writers "typically need a bachelor's degree in English or a related field, such as communications or journalism." It also counts internships and writing such as blogging as useful experience.
