Internet Speeds for Remote Work in Asia: Philippines, Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia and India (2026)

Vietnam's median mobile download jumped from 156.48 Mbps in June 2026 to 205.58 Mbps in July, lifting it from 20th to 10th of 102 countries. Hanoi climbed 33 places in the mobile city ranking that month. The Philippines sits 73rd, with the lowest median mobile upload of the five: 8.44 Mbps.

How fast is home broadband in each country?

Malaysia's home connections upload at well under half their download speed: 69.72 Mbps against 176.51 Mbps in the July 2026 edition of Ookla's Speedtest Global Index. The Philippines runs close to symmetric, at 103.92 Mbps up and 113.37 Mbps down, and so does India, at 58.80 and 63.48.

Upload is the number a video call, a Loom recording or a large Drive sync leans on. On that measure the Philippine median beats Malaysia's, even though Malaysia ranks 44th of 151 countries on download and the Philippines 65th.

The ranks on download:

• Vietnam: 7th, up one place from June. Latency 4 ms, jitter 1 ms.
• Malaysia: 44th. Latency 8 ms.
• Philippines: 65th, up two places. Latency 6 ms.
• India: 100th. Latency 7 ms.
• Indonesia: 113th, up one place. Latency 7 ms, jitter 5 ms.

The world median sits at 127.70 Mbps down, 63.72 Mbps up and 9 ms latency, so Vietnam and Malaysia sit above it on download and the other three below.

Is mobile internet fast enough to work from?

In India and Indonesia the phone downloads faster than the home line. India's July 2026 median mobile download was 129.30 Mbps against 63.48 Mbps on fixed broadband, close to double on Ookla's own two figures. Indonesia's was 64.38 Mbps mobile against 49.94 Mbps fixed.

The world median for mobile is 109.73 Mbps down, 14.19 Mbps up and 24 ms latency. India downloads above that line and uploads below it.

Vietnam's line is not a steady climb. It peaked at 179.24 Mbps in December 2025, fell to 151.78 Mbps in March 2026 and dropped to 29th place, then jumped in July. The Philippine median dipped to 54.13 Mbps in December and has risen for seven straight months since.

What speed does a video call need?

A call needs far less than any median above. Microsoft says Teams can deliver HD video in under 1.5 Mbps, and its Teams network planning page puts best performance for meeting video at 4 Mbps each way. The other vendors publish similar ceilings.

The Zoom rows come from its system requirements page, which also lists 50 to 150 kbps for screen sharing with a video thumbnail. Google's figures are for individuals and small organisations on its Meet network preparation guide.

Loom sets the highest bar in the table. Its recording troubleshooting page asks for at least 5 Mbps upload on the Chrome extension, desktop and mobile apps. The Philippine mobile median of 8.44 Mbps clears it, but a median also means a share of the country's mobile tests came in below it.

Which cities have the fastest internet?

Hanoi has the fastest mobile internet of any ranked city in the five countries: a median of 339.47 Mbps, 10th of 149 cities in the July 2026 Global Index. Ho Chi Minh City leads on fixed broadband at 300.38 Mbps, 15th of 192 cities. Ookla ranks two cities per country here.

Inside each country, the two ranked cities split like this:

• Philippines: Davao City's fixed median, 129.40 Mbps, beats Manila's 93.88. On mobile, Manila leads, 91.30 Mbps to 74.33.
• Malaysia: Johor Bahru beats Kuala Lumpur on fixed, at 197.19 Mbps against 178.39.
• India: Delhi beats Mumbai on both, with 94.60 Mbps fixed and 166.66 Mbps mobile.
• Indonesia: Bekasi edges South Jakarta on fixed, at 59.04 Mbps against 55.31.

Ookla's research team published a second set of city numbers in September 2026, with Q2 2026 data for 13 ASEAN digital nomad hubs. It puts Metro Manila's median fixed download at 118.15 Mbps, above the index's 93.88 Mbps for Manila.

How consistent are connections in the remote-work hubs?

Jakarta's fixed broadband is the least consistent of the nine hubs in these countries. Only 73.1% of its fixed tests in Q2 2026 reached 25 Mbps down and 3 Mbps up, the threshold Ookla uses for its Consistency Score. Ho Chi Minh City reached 92.8%.

The same Ookla article measured mobile stability, which it says decides video call quality more than raw download speed:

• Jitter: Cebu had the highest mobile jitter of the 13 hubs, at 18 ms, and Metro Manila 16 ms. Ookla notes Microsoft Teams classes jitter above 30 ms as poor.
• 5G Availability: Penang scored 40.0%, the lowest of the 13, on Ookla's measure of time that users with 5G phones spend on 5G. Jakarta gained 39.4 percentage points in a year.
• 5G consistency: 75.8% of Cebu's 5G tests cleared 25 Mbps down and 3 Mbps up, against 95.7% in Da Nang.

Mobile speeds rose in 12 of the 13 hubs between Q2 2025 and Q2 2026. Bali gained 62.4% and Jakarta 52.4%, while Da Nang was the only one to fall, by 17.7% to 215.56 Mbps. Metro Manila's mobile median reached 75.57 Mbps, with 10.08 Mbps upload.

Kuala Lumpur and Penang are the two hubs where fixed upload falls below half of download, at 44.1% and 44.4%. Their median uploads of 78.26 and 81.86 Mbps sit far above the 4 Mbps that Teams lists for best performance.

Does the Wi-Fi router matter?

It caps the connection. A Wi-Fi 6 laptop on a Wi-Fi 4 access point performs as a Wi-Fi 4 device, according to Ookla, and legacy Wi-Fi 4 handled 42.7% of reported connections in Jakarta and 41.9% in Bali.

Wi-Fi 7 is rare outside Singapore, where it carries 34.4% of connections. Penang, at 4.6%, has the highest share among the hubs in these countries.

How many people have fixed broadband at home?

The count depends on the denominator. Malaysia's regulator, MCMC, reports 49.0 fixed broadband subscriptions per 100 premises in its Q1 2026 facts and figures. ITU counts 14.01 per 100 people for Malaysia in 2025. One line serves a whole household, so a per-person figure reads lower.

Mobile broadband fills the gap. The ITU DataHub lists active mobile broadband subscriptions per 100 people at 124.71 in Malaysia, 112.98 in Indonesia, 109.61 in Vietnam and 83.40 in the Philippines for 2025, and 61.93 in India for 2024.

Speed tiers differ too. In ITU's 2025 data, 24.54 million of Vietnam's 24.75 million fixed broadband subscriptions were on plans of 100 Mbit/s or more. In Indonesia, 3.70 million of 19.20 million were.

Malaysia's gap is regional. MCMC puts fixed broadband at 64.7 per 100 premises in the federal territories, which include Kuala Lumpur, and 25.2 in Perlis.

43.9% of firms in the Philippines had at least one power outage in their last complete fiscal year, in the World Bank's 2023 Enterprise Survey of 1,002 firms. Vietnam's 2023 survey gave 43.0%. The World Bank's indicator page carries the latest year for each country.

Indonesia had the lowest share, 12.7%, from a survey of 2,955 firms. India's 2025 survey, the largest of the five at 10,479 firms, gave 15.4%, down from 19.9% in 2022. Malaysia's 2024 survey gave 22.3%.

The time windows differ. DataReportal's Digital 2026 India report used Ookla data to August 2025: 131.77 Mbps mobile and 59.07 Mbps fixed. The July 2026 Global Index gives 129.30 and 63.48 Mbps.

Does a VPN slow down video calls?

It can, according to Microsoft, which recommends letting Teams traffic bypass the VPN, since VPNs can route calls through a more distant server and add latency and jitter.
