Upwork charges $0.15 for each Connect, the token you spend to send a proposal, and keeps it if the client hires someone else. That is the entry price for bidding on Upwork. The cheaper channels, a LinkedIn profile, a referral or an agency that needs overflow help, cost nothing to join but take longer to pay off.
#1 Upwork: bid on posted SEO jobs
Upwork takes a Freelancer Service Fee of 0% to 15% per contract. Its help article on the fee says you see the rate before you send a proposal, and it stays fixed once the contract starts. Upwork offers no regular discount on it.

The second cost is the proposal itself. Per Upwork's Connects guide, each Connect costs $0.15 and comes in bundles. Upwork refunds them only if the client cancels the job before a contract. A rejected proposal, a job that expires or a client who picks another freelancer costs you the Connects.
You can earn some back. Upwork gives 30 free Connects for each talent badge, from Rising Talent to Top Rated Plus. New users may get a one-time bonus of 50 after their first purchase or a Freelancer Plus subscription.
Upwork's checklist before you spend Connects is worth following: read the client's hiring history and feedback, and check how many proposals and interviews the job already has.
#2 Fiverr: sell fixed-scope SEO gigs
Fiverr pays sellers 80% of each order, including Gig Extras and tips. Its earnings page guide puts completed orders through a clearing period before the money is yours. Eligible freelancers can skip it with Early Payout, for a 1% fee.
The model rewards a narrow, named deliverable. A buyer on Fiverr picks a Gig at a set price, so "technical SEO audit for Shopify stores, 5 days" sells better than "SEO services". At 80%, a $150 keyword research Gig pays you $120, so price the Gig with the 20% already inside it.
Fiverr suits one-off tasks that can grow. A buyer who liked your audit is the easiest lead you will get for a monthly retainer.
#3 Contra: commission-free invoicing
Contra charges freelancers no commission on any plan. Its pricing page moves the cost to the client on the free plan: $15 per payment, or $29 on payments over $500.
Contra Pro costs you $29 a month or $199 a year and removes that client fee. Pro also lowers Contra's digital product fee to zero and makes faster payouts free. If a client pays you once a month over $500, Pro costs the same as the fee your client would otherwise pay.
Contra works best for clients you bring yourself. A lead from LinkedIn or a referral can sign a contract and pay an invoice on Contra without either side paying a commission.
#4 Toptal and vetted talent networks
Toptal accepts fewer than 3% of the more than 200,000 people who apply each year, per its FAQ. Applicants interview with a senior Toptal expert in the field and complete a test project like a typical client job.

The screen is the cost. Toptal says it takes one to three weeks to locate and fully screen an expert before it introduces them to a client. After that, you do not bid: Toptal matches you, and clients pay a $79 monthly subscription on their side.
Once you are in, you pay no Connects and no Gig fees. Toptal publishes no freelancer fee. Prepare for the test project the way you would for a client: bring traffic graphs with dates, before and after rankings and a past client willing to take a reference call.
#5 LinkedIn: SEO jobs and a free Service Page
LinkedIn's public job search caps its US total for "SEO" at 5,000+, so the date filters give a better read on demand. I ran the search on September 26, 2026:
A US staff job needs US work authorization. Our ranking of the best countries for SEO specialists covers the visa side. For freelancers, the useful posts are contract roles and agencies hiring for overflow.
The second route is a free Service Page. LinkedIn's Services Marketplace lets a buyer describe a project and receive up to 5 proposals from providers. It also shows your experience, recommendations and shared connections to the buyer before the first message.
#6 Cold email to US businesses
The US CAN-SPAM Act covers all commercial email and "makes no exception for business-to-business email", per the FTC's compliance guide. Each separate email that breaks it can draw a penalty of up to $53,088.

The address rule catches freelancers working from home. A post office box registered with the US Postal Service, or a private mailbox registered with a commercial mail receiving agency, both count. The FTC also says you "can't contract away" the duty: if you hire someone to send pitches, you still answer for them.
A pitch that survives that warning names the site, shows one specific problem you found, and asks for nothing more than a reply. Google's same page tells buyers to ask for examples of past work and a full list of changes made to the site. Put both in your first email.
#7 Agencies that subcontract or white label
SEO agencies bill $98.90 an hour on average, against $71.59 for freelancers, in the 2024 Ahrefs pricing survey, which polled 439 providers. That gap is the room an agency has to pay a subcontractor and keep a margin.
- $98.90 average hourly rate
- $3,209 average monthly retainer
- $9,507.84 average per project
- $71.59 average hourly rate
- $1,348.63 average monthly retainer
- $2,348.63 average per project
In white-label work, the agency's client does not see your name. Offer deliverables the agency can resell as its own: audits, content briefs, on-page fixes or outreach. A price per deliverable lets the agency add its markup without tracking your hours.
Put the terms in writing before the first task. Our SEO contract agreement template covers scope, ownership and termination. For white label, add confidentiality and whether you may contact the end client.
#8 Referrals, communities and case studies
In LinkedIn's internal data, 82% of people who hire or have hired a service provider say a referral from their professional network is the best way to find a good one. LinkedIn prints that figure on its Services Marketplace page.

Referrals follow finished work. Ask a happy client for an introduction in the month you deliver a result, while the numbers are fresh, and ask for a LinkedIn recommendation at the same time.
Communities work as a reputation channel, not a sales floor. The r/bigseo subreddit's weekly help thread bans "service offerings" and "DM me for help" posts. The rules still let you answer questions, and your profile does the selling.
How to price a pitch to US clients
Monthly retainers are the most common pricing model in SEO: 78.2% of providers in the 2024 Ahrefs survey charge one. Per-project pricing comes second, at 48.9%.

Providers that serve clients worldwide charge more on retainer than those serving a local market. Ahrefs puts the gap at 123.1%. The most common one-off project fee is $2,501 to $5,000, charged by 21.2% of respondents.
Location sets the anchor. In the same survey, 66.7% of US and Canadian SEOs charge $75 to $200 an hour, while 85.7% of India-based SEOs charge $30 or less.

A freelancer outside the US can price between those bands and still undercut a US agency. Our SEO freelancer rates by country shows where each market sits, and freelance SEO rates in India breaks down one market by platform.
Getting paid by US clients
A US client or platform may ask a non-US freelancer for Form W-8BEN. The IRS page for the form says a foreign person gives it to "the withholding agent or payer", so it goes to your client or the platform, not to the IRS. The current revision is October 2021.
The payout route decides how much of each invoice lands in your bank:
| Route | Client pays by | Fee to you |
|---|---|---|
| Wise USD account details | US bank transfer (not wire) | Free |
| Wise USD account details | Wire or Swift | $6.11 per payment |
| Payoneer payment request | ACH bank debit | 1% |
| Payoneer payment request | Credit card | 2.90% plus $0.49 |
The Wise fees come from its receiving pricing for Philippine residents, and the Payoneer fees from its India pricing page, both read September 26, 2026. Payoneer adds 1% to 4% when you withdraw into a different currency. It also charges $29.95 a year if you receive under $6,000 in 12 months.
A US client pays you $1,000 through a Payoneer payment request by ACH. What does Payoneer charge?
Find US SEO clients through Seotal
Seotal is not an agency. It matches US and Western businesses with vetted freelance SEO and marketing specialists from Asia, in the Philippines, Vietnam, India, Indonesia, Malaysia and a Dubai hub. Clients pay no platform fees, and Seotal holds the contract with each freelancer, so you do not bid for each job.
Our FAQ lists the screen: a portfolio and case study review, a written SEO test, a live technical interview with a senior SEO lead, an English assessment and a reference check. Seotal has no public application form. The how it works page shows the client side, and specialists can reach us through the contact page.
Frequently asked questions
Can I get SEO projects with no experience?
Yes, but start where a small, fixed task can prove you. A Fiverr Gig or a discounted audit for a local business gives you a first case study. Toptal's screen ends in a test project and a live interview, which is hard to pass without past work to point to.
Should I use one marketplace or several?
Fees argue for at least one direct channel. Fiverr keeps 20% of each order, while a LinkedIn lead paid through Contra costs you no commission. Our client-side guide to the websites to hire SEO freelancers shows how buyers compare the same platforms.
