What AI SEO Costs a Small Business or Startup in 2026

The same agency can charge $1,000 a month for SEO and $1,500 for "AI Discover". At its higher tiers, the two products cost the same.

I co-founded Seotal and lead its SEO and GEO work. Founders keep asking us what AI SEO should cost, so on October 1, 2026 we collected the published prices of 60 agencies, 27 tools and 660 AI search freelancers.

What AI SEO costs a small business in 2026

AI SEO, also sold as GEO (generative engine optimization) or AEO (answer engine optimization), is work that gets a business named in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google's AI Overviews. A small business can buy it three ways.

Each range is the middle half of its sample. The freelancer line adds 20 hours at the 25th to 75th percentile rate, $8 to $25 an hour, to the cheapest and the median tracker.

The routes overlap more than the medians suggest. A cheap agency at $199 a month costs less than a freelancer at $25 an hour for 20 hours. Our AI SEO specialist cost guide covers the bigger budgets and in-house salaries.

What agencies charge for AI SEO packages

The median agency entry price is $750 a month. We found 60 providers that publish a monthly or one-off price for AI SEO work on their own site, and 52 of them list a monthly tier.

Prices split into two markets. 31 providers start under $1,000, and 26 of those are agencies rather than productized services. The other 21 start at $1,000 or more, and 16 of those start at $2,000 or more.

At the low end, Ranked AI sells a done-for-you SEO and AI visibility plan for $99 a month. At the top, Discovered Labs charges €6,995 a month on a 6-month term, about $7,903.

Hidden prices are common. Another 35 agencies sell AI search work but show only "book a call" or a market range, so 37% of the 95 providers we found keep their price off the page.

Does AI SEO cost more than regular SEO?

At most agencies, yes, by about a fifth. We found 21 firms that publish a monthly price for both an AI SEO package and a regular SEO package, and compared the cheapest tier of each.

The median AI package costs 1.20 times the same firm's SEO package. Among the 16 firms that price the two differently, the median ratio is 1.42.

Percepture adds $500 at every tier: $3,500 against $3,000 at entry. The HOTH charges $500 more only at entry. Its $2,500, $5,000 and $10,000 AI tiers match its managed SEO tiers dollar for dollar.

Some agencies price AI search as an upgrade. Search Engine Hub in the Philippines leaves AI search out of its ₱15,000 starter plan and adds it in the ₱30,000 growth plan. MediaOne in Singapore goes the other way, with GEO from S$580 a month against S$850 for SEO, because its GEO starter covers one AI platform.

What AI visibility tracking tools cost

The median entry plan across 17 dedicated AI visibility trackers is $99 a month. Two start at $29: Otterly.AI Lite tracks 15 prompts daily across 4 AI engines, and Promptmonitor Starter tracks 25 prompts twice a week.

A prompt is one question the tool asks the AI engines on your behalf, such as "best accountant for startups in Austin". Entry plans range from 15 prompts on Otterly to 200 on SE Visible at $99, so the cost per tracked prompt varies eightfold.

Some SEO suites now bundle prompt tracking, which can replace a separate tracker. SE Ranking Core includes 100 daily prompts and 2,000 keywords for $129. Moz Standard includes 150 weekly prompts for $99. Ahrefs Lite, at $129, includes only 5.

What freelance AI SEO specialists charge

Freelancers who list AI search skills ask a median $14.50 an hour. We read all 660 profiles on Freelancer.com with an hourly rate that list GEO, AEO or ChatGPT Search Optimization. The middle half ask $8 to $25.

India supplies 289 of the 660, Pakistan 96 and Bangladesh 53. We compared each of those countries, plus the US, with 200 SEO freelancers who list no AI search skill.

The AI label does not raise the rate. In Pakistan, AI search freelancers ask $11 against $25 for SEO-only ones, and in Bangladesh $10 against $16. Only the US shows a premium, $50 against $45, from 21 AI search profiles.

Experience explains most of the gap. The SEO-only sample comes from the top of the directory, where accounts have reviews, while most AI search profiles are new.

Among reviewed profiles only, the rates converge: $13 against $12 in India, $20 against $25 in Pakistan and $15 against $17 in Bangladesh. AI search profiles also list a median of 19 skills, against 57 for the SEO-only group.

What to buy first with a small AI SEO budget

AI engines lean on the same pages and signals as search engines, so the first dollars go to work a small business needs anyway. Check that AI crawlers can reach the site: our AI crawler blocking study found that Cloudflare's managed robots.txt accounts for 61% of top Southeast Asian domains that block an AI crawler by name.

Methodology

We collected all three datasets on October 1, 2026, and each price comes from the seller's own page as it loaded that day.

Agencies. We searched for AI SEO, GEO, AEO and LLM optimization pricing in the US, UK, Australia, Canada, India, the Philippines and Singapore, and checked about 120 providers.

60 publish a price for AI search work; 35 more offer it without a price. The entry price is the cheapest monthly AI tier. We excluded two white-label wholesale price lists, and converted other currencies at the ECB reference rates for October 1, 2026.

Tools. We read the pricing pages of 27 AI visibility tools and SEO suites, 88 plans in all, at monthly billing. The tracker median uses the cheapest paid plan of the 17 dedicated trackers with a published price.

Freelancers. We used the Freelancer.com public directory API to read every profile with an hourly rate that lists Generative Engine Optimization, Answer Engine Optimization or ChatGPT Search Optimization: 660 profiles.

For comparison, we took the first 200 SEO profiles in the directory's default order in India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and the US that list none of those skills. Freelancer.com shows hourly rates in US dollars on all accounts.

Hiring an AI SEO specialist through Seotal

Can a small business do AI SEO without an agency?

Yes, for the basics. A tracker costs $29 to $99 a month, and the first fixes are crawler access, consistent business facts and schema. Bring in help when the tracker shows competitors named for prompts you should win.

How long before AI SEO shows results?

Tracking shows a baseline in the first month, because the tools run your prompts daily or weekly. Changes in AI answers follow the same crawl and index cycle as search, so plan on a few months.
