  12. Philippine search engines: frequently asked questions

Yahoo sent 26.67% of Philippine search referrals in 2009, when Bing sent 1.2%. The two swapped places in 2021, and Bing has led Yahoo in each year since. Yahoo's organic results now come from its rival: Yahoo's help page says an algorithm run by Microsoft Bing generates them, so one index feeds the second and third engines in the country.

#1 Google

Google's share in the Philippines sits below its worldwide average. It sent 90.25% of search referrals in the Philippines between September 2025 and August 2026, against 90.41% worldwide, on Statcounter's Philippines search engine data. In August 2026 alone it took 90.76%.

The share is falling from a high base. Google peaked at 97.04% in 2019, stayed above 94% from 2016 to 2023, then dropped to 92.62% in 2024 and 90.92% in 2025. Its lowest month in the past two years was September 2025, at 89.74%.

Google's yearly share of search referrals in the Philippines fell from 97.0% in 2019 to 92.6% in 2024 and 90.4% for January to August 2026

The device changes the picture. Over the twelve months to August 2026, Google held:

  • 97.61% of mobile search referrals
  • 97.04% of tablet search referrals
  • 84.16% of desktop search referrals

Bing and Yahoo gained 6.37 points between 2019 and 2026, most of the 6.69 points Google lost. Google's desktop share fell from 95.09% to 84.73% over those years, while its mobile share moved from 98.82% to 97.57%.

Google belongs to Alphabet, and Google Search Console is the only first-party source for the queries that bring Philippine clicks to a site, and its Performance report filters by country. Run English, Filipino and Taglish versions of a target keyword through that report before choosing which one a page leads with.

#2 Bing

Bing's share across all devices in the Philippines is higher than its share worldwide. It sent 6.03% of Philippine search referrals over the twelve months to August 2026, up from 5.41% a year earlier, against 4.55% worldwide. Its best month in the last two years was July 2026, at 6.51%, and August came in at 6.13%.

The yearly series shows the climb. Bing sent 0.83% of referrals in 2019, 2.45% in 2021, 4.74% in 2024 and 6.06% for January to August 2026.

Most of Bing's traffic comes from desktop computers. It took 10.03% of desktop referrals over the past year, 2.08% on tablets and 1.19% on phones, per Statcounter's desktop data. Its desktop share is shrinking even as its total rises:

Bing's share of desktop search referrals in the Philippines fell from 12.09% to 10.03% between the two twelve month periods to August, while Google rose from 81.31% to 84.16% and Yahoo fell from 6.12% to 5.31%

Microsoft Edge, which ships with Bing as its default search engine per Microsoft's Edge support page, fell from 11.28% to 9.46% of desktop page views in the Philippines over the same two periods, in Statcounter's desktop browser data. Chrome rose from 77.21% to 81.65%.

Microsoft owns Bing, and Bing's index also feeds Yahoo, most of DuckDuckGo's links and part of Ecosia. For SEO in the Philippines that makes two tools worth the setup time:

  • Bing Webmaster Tools: crawl errors, index coverage and search queries for Bing, whose index also feeds Yahoo's results.
  • IndexNow: a ping that tells Bing a URL changed. The list of participating engines names Bing, Yandex, Seznam, Naver, Yep, the Internet Archive and Amazonbot. Google is not on it.
On which device does Bing take the largest share of Philippine searches?
Desktop. It sent 10.03% of desktop search referrals over the twelve months to August 2026, against 1.19% on phones.

#3 Yahoo

Yahoo sends more than twice its worldwide share of search traffic in the Philippines. It took 3.02% of Philippine referrals over the twelve months to August 2026, against 1.37% worldwide. August 2026 was weaker, at 2.44%.

Its results come from Bing. The Yahoo Help page on ranking tells site owners that an algorithm run by Microsoft Bing generates Yahoo Search results, and points them to Bing's webmaster guidelines. Funds managed by Apollo Global Management have owned Yahoo since September 2021, per Yahoo's press release on the deal.

Yahoo is a desktop engine in the Philippines. It took 5.31% of desktop referrals over the past year and 0.27% of mobile referrals. Its desktop share in August 2026, 3.97%, was its lowest in the 24 months of monthly data.

#4 DuckDuckGo

DuckDuckGo's Philippine share doubled in under two years, from 0.13% in September 2024 to 0.27% in August 2026. It averaged 0.27% over the twelve months to August 2026, still below its 0.76% worldwide share.

Phones drive the growth, unlike Bing and Yahoo. DuckDuckGo took 0.36% of mobile search referrals over the past year and 0.21% on desktop, per Statcounter's mobile data. Its yearly mobile share rose from 0.09% in 2024 to 0.23% in 2025 and 0.37% for January to August 2026. That puts DuckDuckGo third on Philippine phones, behind Google and Bing.

DuckDuckGo is an independent, privacy-focused company. Its help page on result sources says most of its traditional links and images come from Bing, and that it also runs its own crawler, DuckDuckBot.

#5 Ecosia

Ecosia matched its best month of the past two years in August 2026, with 0.21% of Philippine search referrals, the same as in July. Over the twelve months to August 2026 it averaged 0.16%, up from 0.13% a year earlier.

The engine had a larger spike before. Its yearly share reached 0.45% in 2022, then fell to 0.14% in 2023 and 0.13% in 2024 and 2025. It splits almost level across devices: 0.17% of desktop referrals and 0.16% of mobile referrals over the past year.

Ecosia's help page on result providers says results and ads come from Microsoft Bing, Google and EUSP, the index Ecosia runs with Qwant. Bing is available to all users, Google only in some regions and browsers, and EUSP only in France. For a Philippine site, Ecosia rankings follow Bing or Google, not a separate index.

Yandex sits one place below the top five, at 0.11% over the past year. Petal Search, Huawei's engine, took 0.06%.

How have search engine shares in the Philippines changed since 2009?

Yahoo lost most of its Philippine share between 2009 and 2012, falling from 26.67% to 7.63% while Google rose from 70.71% to 90.51%. Bing stayed below 2% in each year until 2021.

Yahoo's share of Philippine search referrals fell from 17.06% in 2010 to 1.35% in 2022 and rose to 2.9% in 2026, while Bing rose from under 1% in 2016 to 6.06% in 2026

Four phases show up in Statcounter's yearly series:

  • 2009 to 2012: Google takes over from Yahoo. Ask Jeeves still had 0.76% in 2009.
  • 2013 to 2019: Google climbs to its 97.04% peak and Yahoo slides to 1.76%.
  • 2020 to 2023: Bing passes Yahoo in 2021 and reaches 2.84% in 2022. Petal Search takes 0.68% in 2022, then drops back.
  • 2024 to 2026: Google drops below 93% as Bing's desktop share jumps from 6.65% in 2023 to 11.40% in 2024.

The 2015 split gives a clean reference point: Google 92.81%, Yahoo 4.65%, Bing 1.24%, Ask Jeeves 0.94%. Bing's 2026 share is almost five times its 2015 level.

Which search engines lead on desktop, mobile and tablet?

The ranking behind Google depends on the device. On desktop over the past twelve months, Bing ranked second with 10.03%, Yahoo third with 5.31%, then DuckDuckGo (0.21%) and Ecosia (0.17%). On phones, DuckDuckGo (0.36%) moved ahead of Yahoo (0.27%).

Over the twelve months to August 2026 Google took 84.16% of desktop and 97.61% of mobile searches in the Philippines, Bing 10.03% and 1.19%, and Yahoo 5.31% and 0.27%

Tablets sit between the two. Statcounter's tablet data gives Google 97.04%, Bing 2.08%, Yahoo 0.28%, DuckDuckGo 0.22% and Yandex 0.15% over the past year. Ecosia, at 0.14%, drops to sixth on tablets.

A Philippine B2B site whose visitors sit at desktops can see about one search click in seven come from Bing or Yahoo. A consumer app landing page read on phones will see close to none.

How does Cloudflare's data compare with Statcounter's?

Cloudflare measures lower shares for Bing and Yahoo. Its 2025 Year in Review for the Philippines reads the Referer header on traffic to sites behind Cloudflare. For November 2025, the last month in its series, the two sources compare like this:

Engine, November 2025StatcounterCloudflare Radar
Google90.54%93.26%
Bing5.79%2.78%
Yahoo3.03%1.29%
Brave Searchnot listed1.56%
OpenAI (ChatGPT)not listed0.44%

The gap closes on desktop. Cloudflare put Bing at 10.64% of Philippine desktop referrals in November 2025, and Statcounter at 10.34%. On mobile, Cloudflare ranked Brave Search second at 1.61%, ahead of Bing at 0.60%.

Cloudflare counts ChatGPT as a search referrer; Statcounter reports chatbots in a separate series. The two samples also differ: Cloudflare sees traffic to sites on its network, and Statcounter sees sites running its code.

Our guide to how AI Overviews choose local businesses covers the ranking side.

Do AI chatbots replace search engines in the Philippines?

No, search engines still reach twice as many people. GWI's Q2 2025 survey, published in DataReportal's Digital 2026 report for the Philippines, found 91.0% of internet users aged 16+ used a search engine each month, against 42.4% who used ChatGPT.

91.0% of Filipino internet users aged 16+ use a search engine each month, 42.4% use ChatGPT each month and 36.0% use image search on mobile each month

Statcounter tracks chatbot clicks in a separate series. Its AI chatbot market share data for the Philippines splits referrals from chatbots to websites, and it does not add them to search engine share.

ChatGPT sent 80.57% of AI chatbot referrals in the Philippines between September 2025 and August 2026, Google Gemini 7.95%, Perplexity 6.75%, Microsoft Copilot 4.10% and Claude 0.62%

Gemini is the mover. Its share of chatbot referrals rose from 3.32% in the twelve months to August 2025 to 7.95% in the twelve months to August 2026, and reached 13.40% in August 2026 alone. Perplexity fell from 10.09% to 6.75% over the same periods.

Regional detail on ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity sits in our AI search use in Southeast Asia report, and the country's wider numbers in the Philippines digital marketing statistics. The Southeast Asia SEO statistics compare the Philippines with five neighbours.
