Freelancer.com listed 60,575 profiles with its SEO skill on November 5, 2026, and 24,718 of them were in India. Upwork, the larger business by money moved, reported 785,000 active clients at the end of 2025 and $4.0 billion in gross services volume. Both will find you someone to fix title tags by Friday. They differ in what you pay on top, how much screening is left to you and who is likely to bid.

What does each platform cost a client hiring an SEO expert?

On a $1,000 fixed-price SEO project, Freelancer.com adds $30 and Upwork's Basic plan adds $50 plus a one-time contract fee. Both platforms publish these rates on their own pages, and both also take a cut from the freelancer, which is priced into the bids you see.

On a $1,000 SEO project the client pays a $30 fee on Freelancer.com, up to $45 on Upwork Basic with the US checking discount, up to $65 on Upwork Basic and $100 on Upwork Business Plus

Card and PayPal payments on Freelancer.com carry a separate transaction fee of $0.30 plus 2.3%, so a client paying by card should add that to the 3%. For a year of monthly SEO retainers, the gap between the two platforms is small next to the rate you agree with the freelancer.

How do SEO rates compare on Freelancer.com and Upwork?

Rates sit in the same band on both. Upwork's SEO expert cost page gives a median of $21 an hour and a typical range of $15 to $35. On Freelancer.com, the 2,999 SEO profiles we pulled with an hourly rate had a median of $20, with the middle half between $10 and $30.

Country matters more than platform. The middle half of US profiles asked $25 to $60 an hour; the middle half of Philippine profiles asked $6 to $15.

Freelancer.com SEO hourly rates by country, middle half and median: United States $25 to $60 with a $40 median, United Kingdom $18 to $45 with $25, Pakistan $12 to $25 with $20, India $8 to $20 with $15, Vietnam $8 to $25 with $15, Philippines $6 to $15 with $10

The UK median rose from $25 to $30 when we kept only profiles with at least one review, and Vietnam's rose from $15 to $20. In the US the median stayed at $40 either way. Our freelance SEO rates by country post goes deeper on what each market charges for audits, link building and retainers.

Where are the SEO freelancers on each platform?

Most of Freelancer.com's SEO supply sits in South Asia. India alone holds 41% of the 60,575 SEO profiles, and Pakistan another 6,920.

Freelancer.com profiles with the SEO skill by country, November 2026: India 24,718, Pakistan 6,920, United States 2,394, Philippines 821, United Kingdom 628, Vietnam 519

That mix shapes who bids. With close to half the SEO profiles in India and Pakistan, most bids on an open post are likely to come from there. If you want a native English content lead or an SEO who knows US local search, plan to filter hard. Our India freelance SEO rates and Philippines freelance SEO rates posts show what you get at each price point in those markets.

Upwork does not publish profile counts by skill or country. What it does publish is the client side: 785,000 active clients at the end of 2025, down 6% from 832,000 a year earlier, with customers in more than 180 countries, according to Upwork's 2025 annual report. Freelancers on Upwork need Connects, virtual tokens they buy, to bid on a job, so each proposal costs the freelancer something.

How much does the SEO freelancer keep on each platform?

On the same $1,000 fixed-price job, a freelancer on Freelancer.com keeps $900. On Upwork the freelancer keeps between $850 and $1,000, because Upwork's Freelancer Service Fee now ranges from 0% to 15% per contract instead of a flat rate.

Upwork says the fee is set from factors that keep the marketplace "balanced and competitive", and the freelancer sees the exact percentage when they send a proposal or receive an offer. Once the contract starts, the rate is locked. Its help article gives the example of a freelancer who wants $20 an hour after fees and uses the built-in calculator to set the bid.

That matters to you as the client for one reason: bids include the fee. An SEO who wants to net $30 an hour has to bid about $33.33 on Freelancer.com, where the cut is 10%. On Upwork the same person might bid $30 on one contract and $35 on another, depending on the fee Upwork shows them. When two SEO bids on Upwork differ by a few dollars, the gap can come from the platform fee rather than the freelancer's experience.

Refunds work the same way on both. If Upwork refunds the client, it also returns the freelancer's fee on that amount. On Freelancer.com, a milestone dispute that goes to arbitration costs $5 or 5%, whichever is greater.

How does hiring an SEO expert work on each platform?

The steps look alike, and the money flow is the same idea: you fund a milestone before work starts, and the platform holds it until you release it.

Hiring on Freelancer.com in five steps: post the project free, review bids, award the project and pay the 3% fee, fund a milestone, release payment when the work is done

On Freelancer.com, Milestone Payments stay in your account until you release them, refund them or a dispute is settled. If you and the freelancer cannot agree, either side can move the dispute to paid arbitration four days after it is filed, or 14 days if the freelancer filed it.

Upwork adds two things an SEO hire can use. Hourly contracts come with Hourly Payment Protection, tied to the time a freelancer logs in the work diary. Business Plus, at a 10% fee, adds access to what Upwork calls "pre-vetted top 1% of talent" and its Uma Recruiter tool. For a technical SEO audit worth several thousand dollars, a vetted shortlist can save days of interviews.

Freelancer.com vs Upwork for an SEO hire

Contests are Freelancer.com's one feature with no Upwork equivalent. They suit small SEO tasks with a visible output, such as title and meta description rewrites for ten pages, where you can compare entries side by side. They suit strategy work badly, because few experienced SEOs will do a free audit for a prize they probably will not win.

Which platform fits which SEO hire?

Pick by how big and how ongoing the work is. A one-off task with a clear output and a small budget fits Freelancer.com; a retainer or a technical project fits Upwork, or a vetted service.

Which platform to use by budget and how long the SEO work runs: small one-off tasks fit Freelancer.com contests or fixed projects, small ongoing work fits an Upwork hourly contract, large one-off audits fit Upwork Business Plus, and large ongoing programmes fit a vetted SEO hire

Three checks save money on either platform:

  • Write the job as a deliverable. "Fix the 40 pages Search Console flags as Crawled, not indexed" draws better bids than "improve our SEO".
  • Pay for a small paid test first. A two-hour audit of one template tells you more than a profile review, and it costs less than a bad month.
  • Check the work, not the badge. A star rating averages all the jobs a freelancer did. Read the written reviews from clients who bought the same kind of work you need.

If you are weighing a freelancer against an agency for the same work, our SEO agency vs freelancer comparison covers the cost and control trade-off, and websites to hire SEO freelancers covers the platforms beyond these two.

Skip the bidding with a vetted SEO

Both marketplaces leave the screening to you. Seotal matches you with a vetted SEO specialist from Asia for an ongoing role, already tested on real search work, so you interview a shortlist instead of reading a hundred bids. See how it works and our pricing, or hire an SEO specialist directly.

Frequently asked questions

Is Freelancer.com cheaper than Upwork for hiring SEO?

On fees, yes. Freelancer.com charges clients 3% or $3, against Upwork's 5% Marketplace fee and a contract fee of up to $14.99. The hourly rates SEO freelancers ask are close on both: a $20 median in our Freelancer.com sample and a $21 median on Upwork.

Can I hire an SEO expert on Upwork without the contract initiation fee?

On the Business Plus plan, yes, except on fixed-price contracts of $100 or less. Business Plus charges a 10% fee instead of 5%, so it only pays off if you need its vetted shortlist or team tools.

Are SEO freelancers on Freelancer.com legitimate?

Many are, but the platform does not vet them before they bid. Check reviews from clients who bought similar work, ask for proof of results, and start with a small milestone you release only when the work is done.
