Only 143 of the 421,259 sites in BuzzStream's 2026 link marketplace study were both high quality and willing to sell a link insertion. Of the sites that do sell insertions, 97.5% failed its traffic and Domain Rating test. Buyers pay little for links from sites with no readers, and a lot for the few with an audience.
How much does a backlink cost in 2026?
A link insertion on a DR 80+ site averages $461, the same price as the average guest post bought through a vendor. Both numbers come from BuzzStream's 2026 studies of one large link marketplace, which list prices by Domain Rating (DR), traffic and industry. The method sets the range, and the site's quality sets the point inside it:
- Link insertions (a link added to an existing article): $113 on DR 0 to 9 sites, up to $461 on DR 80+ sites.
- Guest posts through a vendor: about $200 at DR 0 to 9, up to about $3,000 at DR 80+.
- Digital PR links: $150 for guest posting services, up to $800 for hero content campaigns. These are estimated midpoints from BuzzStream's survey of about 70 agencies and freelancers.

Older data ranks the methods the other way round. Ahrefs' Joshua Hardwick asked 450 sites to sell him a link outright and got an average quote of $361.44 for a niche edit. Guest post pitches to 180 sites drew an average fee of $77.80. Hardwick describes it as a small study run "a few years ago", in a post first published in November 2022.
The two sources measured different things. Hardwick priced direct email deals where he still had to write the guest post himself. BuzzStream reads marketplace listings, where the fee pays the site to write and publish the article.
How much does a guest post cost?
Top Tier news sites charge $3,836 for a guest post bought direct and $7,209 through a typical vendor. The dearest single placement on BuzzStream's list cost over $125,000. Across all 257,267 sites in BuzzStream's guest post cost study, updated June 15, 2026, the averages are $295 direct and $461 through a vendor.

The quality tiers explain most of the spread. BuzzStream defines them with Ahrefs data:
- Top Tier: DR 81+ and 100,000+ monthly organic visits. Average vendor price: $6,018.
- High Quality: DR 71 to 80 and 50,000+ visits. Average vendor price: $3,130.
- Mid Quality: DR 40 to 70 and 10,000 to 49,999 visits.
- Low Quality: everything else, which is 96.2% of the marketplace.
The high tiers got dearer fast. BuzzStream's previous study, a year earlier, framed a top-tier guest post at around $965. Its author, Vince Nero, puts the jump down to a larger dataset and higher demand for scarce sites.
How much do niche edits and link insertions cost?
Only 14.9% of the 421,259 sites in BuzzStream's link insertion study offer insertions at all, while almost all of them sell guest posts. An insertion costs $179 on average. It is cheaper than a guest post because the site drops your link into an article that already exists, with no new writing.
Price climbs with authority, with one dip. Sites in the DR 30s charge $246, while sites in the DR 40s charge $197.

Traffic gives a steadier curve. Insertions on sites with 0 to 100 monthly visits average $137, and those on sites with 100,000+ visits average $510. By quality tier, the 29 Top Tier sites that sell insertions average $778, and the 40,730 Low Quality sites average $174.
Agencies that sell insertions a la carte price them by the same two dials. Reporter Outreach's price list, read on September 13, 2026, charges:
- $300 a link for DR 50+ sites with at least 1,000 monthly organic visits.
- $400 a link for DR 60+ sites with at least 5,000 visits.
- $500 a link for DR 70+ sites with at least 10,000 visits.
Why do some links cost so much more than others?
Gambling guest posts look like the cheapest in BuzzStream's marketplace at $238 each, until you filter for quality. The 108 gambling sites with DR 50+ and 10,000+ monthly visits averaged $1,109. About 70% of the 10,000-plus gambling sites listed had no organic traffic at all.
Traffic is the first price driver. A vendor charges $229 for a guest post on a site under 100 monthly visits and $3,210 above 100,000. Nero calls traffic the better predictor, since "traffic is harder to fake than DR". The cheap end of the list is where most of the inventory sits:

Niche is the second. Sports sites were the dearest industry in the guest post data at $572 per post, followed by News and Media at $567. Health and Wellness sat near the bottom at $352. For insertions, Law and Government was cheapest at $126.
The survey data agrees on where budgets run highest. In Editorial.Link's 2026 survey of 518 SEO professionals, 61.0% named gambling as the industry that needs the biggest link building budgets. Finance followed at 18.4% and law at 16.4%.
Which predicts a guest post's price better in BuzzStream's 2026 data, traffic or Domain Rating?
How much does digital PR cost?
Hero content, such as a data study, averages an $8,000 monthly contract. That is the top of four service types in BuzzStream's digital PR cost survey, updated June 12, 2026. Across all respondents, the average contract is $5,458 a month and the average cost per link is $597.

The provider type moves both numbers:
| Provider type | Average cost per link | Average monthly contract |
|---|---|---|
| Agency | $663 | $6,357 |
| Freelancer | $416 | $4,200 |
| US respondents | $350 | $6,154 |
| UK respondents | $818 | $5,227 |
A third of respondents do not know their cost per link, an answer far more common among freelancers and consultants. About one in four put it below $300. The survey drew about 70 agency leaders and freelancers, 54% of them in the UK and 23% in the US, so treat the regional rows as a small sample.
Published plans show how per-placement pricing works in practice. Reporter Outreach's digital PR plans run $3,000 a month for 7 placements, $6,000 for 15 and $12,000 for 32, on publications with a DR 75+ average and a 3-month minimum.
What do HARO and other journalist request platforms cost?
HARO costs nothing for sources in 2026: its sign-up page for sources offers free daily media queries in three emails a day. Cision, its previous owner, rebranded it as Connectively and then closed the platform on December 9, 2024. Featured.com revived it the following April.
- 2008HARO is founded as an email service connecting journalists with expert sources.
- Dec 9, 2024Cision closes Connectively, the rebranded HARO platform.
- Apr 16, 2025Featured.com announces it has acquired HARO and keeps it free for journalists and sources.
The Featured.com acquisition announcement says HARO "will remain free for journalists and sources". The paid tools sit around it:
- Qwoted: a free Basic plan with 2 pitches a month, and Qwoted Pro at $149 a month with 35 pitches.
- Featured.com: a free plan, then Lite at $29 a month and Pro at $79 a month, both billed annually.
The subscription is the small part of the bill. Agencies that answer journalist requests for clients charge an estimated $4,000 a month on average, at about $400 per link, in the BuzzStream survey.
What do link building agencies charge per month?
uSERP's $10,000 Accelerate package delivers 19 links a month, and 11 of them are DR 60+. Its $5,500 Launch package delivers 15, but only 5 are DR 60+. The price rises faster than the link count because the share of DR 60+ links rises with it.

uSERP's pricing page values DR 60+ links at $600 to $900 each and DR 20 to 59 links at $250 to $375. Its top published tier, Dominate, costs $15,000 a month for 16 DR 60+ links and 12 DR 20 to 59 links. All three plans start with a 3-month engagement, then roll monthly.
Editorial.Link's price list works per link instead. Its base rate is $375 per backlink. The Startup package costs $1,750 for 5 dofollow links at $350 each, and a 20-link package costs $6,000, or $300 a link, with an average DR of 50 to 90.

What does in-house link building cost?
The Bureau of Labor Statistics has no occupation for link builders. Its closest category, market research analysts and marketing specialists, had a median pay of $78,760 a year in 2025. Your in-house link builder also needs data and outreach software.
Ahrefs' pricing page lists Lite at $129 a month. Pitchbox's Pro plan costs $300 a month billed monthly for a year, or $210 a month billed annually. Placement fees come on top if your team buys any.
Most teams split the work. In Editorial.Link's survey, 56% of respondents outsource at least part of their link building, and 44% keep all of it in-house. If you outsource to an individual, compare SEO freelancer rates by country first.
Is paying for links against Google's rules?
Yes, when the link passes ranking credit. "Buying or selling links for ranking purposes" is the first example of link spam in Google's spam policies, and the list names "exchanging goods or services for links" and paid advertorials too. The same page says such links are not a violation when they carry rel="nofollow" or rel="sponsored".
"Sites that violate our policies may rank lower in results or not appear in results at all."
That line comes from the same Google Search Central page. Google's guide to qualifying outbound links asks publishers to "mark links that are advertisements or paid placements (commonly called paid links) with the sponsored value."
Google can also cancel a paid link's value by algorithm. Its December 2022 link spam update trained SpamBrain to detect "both sites buying links, and sites used for the purpose of passing outgoing links".
Link builders doubt the enforcement. In Editorial.Link's 2026 survey, 91.89% believe their competitors buy links, and 56.0% do not think Google can identify and discount paid links effectively.
What does a realistic monthly link building budget look like?
Half of the digital PR contracts in BuzzStream's survey are under $5,000 a month (52.5%), and another 38% run $5,000 to $10,000. SEOs in Editorial.Link's survey put $8,406 as the average minimum to compete in highly competitive niches. Their answers ranged from $4,000 to $150,000.
Budgets also follow the wider SEO spend. Agency professionals in Editorial.Link's survey give 32.1% of the overall SEO budget to link building, and in-house teams give 36.03%. To size that wider budget first, see what SEO costs a small business.
